Ystudio Classic Renaissance Limited Edition YAKIHAKU Fountain Pen
Extraordinary craftsmanship with Japanese ‘Flat Foil’
YSTUDIOÂ collaborates with Rakugei, a traditional foil art workshop in Japan, to create another unique piece.Â
This beautiful fountain pen forms part of YAKIHAKU series; a collaboration between YSTUDIO and Kohei Murata, a skilled craftsman in the rare art of UnryÅ«haku (Japanese Flat Foil) who has expertly applied this rare material onto each pen.Â
What’s UnryÅ«haku?
In developing this unique collection, the ancient Unryūhaku silver-foil technique was used. This technique was first discovered in a Japanese city called Kanazawa by the founder of Rakugei (and grandfather of Kohei Murata) before the Second World War. Since the original Unryūhaku technique has scarcely been documented, the Murata family has been devoted to reviving this mysterious silver foil since the post-war period. Around half a century ago, they successfully re-created the art of Unryūhaku which YSTUDIO has used in the making of this beautiful fountain pen.
Each pen has its own unique beauty: the tones are dark and moody, intensifying the glittering vein-like pattern of aged foil. To own this pen is an opportunity to own something very personal; a piece of art made using a technique, almost lost to the pages of history and steeped in centuries of rich culture snd heritage.Â
The body of the fountain pen is made using solid brass, as is the fountain pen stand. Each pen is presented in a beautiful dark wooden gift box, complete with a black card outer-sleeve to match the design of the body and an informational booklet.Â
The artist behind the design
Mr. Kohei Murata, the owner of Rakugei and the third generation successor of his family-owned studio, learned the flat foil technique form his father while still a university student. Since then, Mr. Murata has won many awards in his traditional craftsmanship.
